The Department of Archaeology and Heritage of the town of Fréjus carries out the majority of preventive archaeological opera-tions on its territory since its creation in 1982. The town is located on the Mediterranean coast, at the mouth of the Argens River, which makes it particularly exposed to coastal movements and landscape changes. Fréjus was originally a Roman military port but has never stopped evolving, especially with the environmental changes. The excavations in the town and its surroundings have been done in parallel with geomorphological studies and multidisciplinary approaches thanks to a collaboration with numerous institutional partners. Those excavations are now done with suitable methods, leading to a better understanding of the urban features’ changes, especially during the Roman period.
